Sharing small datasets with Ziptable

Ziptable is a potentially useful tool for sharing small CSV/JSON datasets, either on this forum or with colleagues:

Drag or paste in your dataset and it will create a URL that contains the enitre dataset. For example, this is a 26 row x 4 column list of Eurovision entries:

https://ziptbl.com/#d=eNolVMuO4zYQvPMreMpe-iBK8usUeB47L3thjJ0ZZG5tizvmiiINPjzR_k0uAYI95hP8YylpAIMwoGJ3VXU1N5YPmq59din0tPXunZYhmZho5xNbefLGpUibvLfmIM8-aXrMof_898yuFYqWOaZgmF45Jt3IlT8D9Eh1NSU1m1M5mdNClPQQA2tL3_SHvOFevhpr5bOJmv7MZ3R65tNx-F5NZlQuZjQtqBYV3cbkHYrfxlPQMXrZ8eFwNJw8GHZdL685HnFp-tlnTpWoafuhG-3oigPLPTfDEVOmp-UjVaUitZiQKnGjEhN6gMyeXrzVZy_RQQcts5NNDp5W-WC8vPYhGpSfEmipyYJULaZ0F7SGdUtoDr67_J2YniyfG3AtKzXWVwX6zMSMvgZ2wK65Y0crn9lpgAqaFKTmBZW1mNPS7nkQ-vZDh462x9Y3YH9rdZsCHGhxQ81RrqJ6QuVULOiPNrBBpSsTGum_y03gnt7Mdx32ltMnHJ7AyJlQBUwx6acOll0DuT2_a3rzl19yffkFbE3FeKqFUIq-GjfiHg5H2cJmTbfBtCxfTDtIUItB3Jzm6FAJVWKo6fhZOtL1Fx2TXA1gJMtybjRoT6guAa5gjFAVrTidIfYqBwzUScumM7TjnHKnTeI4Mh9uKHRSAsQ2fmR0xz8YEYypdyy3SR9-tv4jtowLQFYYzjAjoSZ0Bx_Z9UiBtTrQcu-D_E3ueucGsKJZTTNgpwItViYd82j_jhEDbvtIT5wYg48EsdOSqppQdoYhWox6q8PZYFnWBskHk2vvsBALRTClorIQMP-bDx-YyMq8H5EReuqtlkuLiEEHwjVf0BRRh0ahMExnhuV5QtHGd_R65CR3Ry3vNdZk0Cvv-XTSTje_07PudLfXQa69a9ABYyiGYy7KAuvb6UHINoPh2QfacHinGQQUo6EAKZgZUn5nSzc6Wn_gxtM3PvEYyIoq0FICzFb5LzTyGQUwz5PPp8u_WnaDVgkx0SPNnBHT3dEHRzXu1Qg2lQLHjXYdh5bu4T_2yHEywG8N9NsROgYZUOzrCUHGirNszJlpra1v-oEGYlviKRAl9vSgxwA8X_5jern8syeECT8wLgSWbYsYrTkYh4chp8TSfhlWG07c8R4v1macEKphMgts8_-Ny4pf

This is a bit unwieldy. However clicking on Shorten link shortens it to:

https://tinyurl.com/2xtpyohj

Clicking on either link then takes you to the Ziptable site, where you can download the data.

The saving is in the tinyURL. I do not recognise the encoding. It conforms with Base64 except for use of - and _ which are possibly instead of + and /

After compressing and encoding it is only 7% shorter than the original, counting from after the first “=”.

I am surprised it is limited to CSV and JSON, since compressing and encoding work for anything. Perhaps it is to do with what data styles they present in the browser.

How much compression is possible will depend a lot on the dataset.

I think it is what they can display in the browser. Perhaps they will add more data types in future.
