EAN/Gtin verification

Hi @Admin ,

as you seem to be looking into verification once again, could you please consider to have a look into EAN/gtin validation once more? At the moment we have “Is valid EAN13”, but we would need a more general “is a valid EAN/gtin” as there is no rule that says articles only have EAN13 or Ean8 or whatever (gtin beeing the correct name for the former EAN), so if you have a list of products and want to check the EAN, you might meet all kinds of those, not only EAN13.

It is on our list of things to look into.

If we add an extra check Is valid GTIN that checked whether each value in a column matched one of the following:

  • GTIN-8
  • GTIN-12
  • GTIN-13
  • GTIN-14

Where:

  • GTIN-12 is the same as UPC-A
  • GTIN-13 is the same as EAN-13
  • spaces are ignored

Would that cover it?

Yes, I think so - great. From my experience, EAN-13 is by far the most common, you sometimes get to see EAN-8 or EAN-14, I never consciously met a EAN-12. But I am no expert if there might be other versions that should theoretically be included in the list…

GTIN-12 seems to be a thing, so we have included it.

The GTIN check will be in the next release, along with ISBN and IBAN checks.
