Portable version

For the ones that are not admin on their (work) machines (like myself), could a portable version of EDT be a reliable solution (in order to follow all updates on the fly).

It is a possibility for a future release. It is something we have done with other products and it isn’t too hard. Mostly it just involves reading preference from a .ini file rather than the Windows registry (or equivalent). But, so far, I think you are the only person to ask for it. But I have made a note and we will see if there are any other requests.

Thank you very much sir :+1:

Add me to the interested list. My work environment is pretty locked down.

@Titus So do you want to run from a USB key? Do you need any changes beyond storing preferences in a local (.ini) file rather than the Windows registry (or Mac equivalent)?

Hi,

Add me in also, in the favor of Portable version. It would be fantastic if I can have EDT in my USB, plus not get IT involved every time a new version comes up to come and install the update and remove the previous version.

As @Titus said, majority of users are not local admin on their machine or have access to local admin privileges.

When a portable version of EDT is live, let’s not forget to list it under: https://portableapps.com

Hopefully this would add extra audiences to EDT which truly deserves an even bigger reputation.

Hi,

@Admin, how far in the future are we talking about it here?, as I was hoping that it might be in 1.42.0 release.

As it will be off great help, that without involving IT can upgrade to new releases, by simply overwriting the previous folder with the new.

Hopefully the first release of v2. But I can’t make any promises when v2 might be.

We might have chance to squeeze it in v1. Watch this space…

I was thinking of asking you, if it is possible to make it before v2, it looks like you read my mind, looking at this space cheerfully for the availability of portable version.

We’ve been able to re-use the approach and code from our https://www.hyperplan.com application, so that made it a lot quicker than writing it from scratch. It is mostly done. Just need to make it a bit more intelligent about handling differences in paths for ‘recent files’ when you move your USB between machines (e.g. Windows to Mac).

Thank you for this improvement. I’ve bought a SSD with USB and the portable version of EDT is on it. Now I don’t mind if IT forces me to use another (work) laptop or be relying on them when there is an EDT release. This is awesome, thanks!
